Deputies search for masked attacker after shooting, stabbing at Orange County apartment complex

One person was injured in a violent attack Tuesday morning at an Orange County apartment complex, deputies said.
The incident was reported just before 1 a.m. at the Valencia Trace Apartments near the intersection of state roads 408 and 417, investigators said.
Resident Ruben Santiago was on the phone with his girlfriend when he heard a loud bang, which he did not initially realize was a gunshot.
“I heard a loud noise. I heard a ‘bah,’ and I felt the building shake,” he said. “At first I thought maybe someone slammed the door. It was really loud. I felt the vibration. I looked out and I didn’t see anything.”
A short time later, Orange County deputies arrived at the apartment complex and found a 26-year-old man who had been shot and stabbed.
The victim, who was not identified, told investigators that he was talking on the phone in the breezeway when a masked man approached him and opened fire.
Santiago was shaken by the attack.
“I am here thinking, ‘I live in the same neighborhood. There are kids running around,’” he said. “You would think that something like this would never happen in a neighborhood like this.”
Jafet Bustamante has lived at Valencia Trace for six years and said he has never heard of a shooting happening in his neighborhood.
The victim of Tuesday’s attack was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover from his injuries, deputies said.
