Deputies: Viera HS football coach accused of sending explicit emails to teen

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — The principal at Viera High School held an emergency meeting Friday night to inform parents about an undercover sting that led to the arrest of one of the school's assistant football coaches.

Kevin Verpaele, 32, is accused of sending inappropriate emails asking an underage student for sex.

Deputies posed as the underage girl and said the coach agreed to meet them at a parking lot.

"What he was asking for was a sexual act. Um … they were making arrangements to meet together," said Lt. Tod Goodyear of the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

The teen girl's friend alerted school administrators, who called deputies.

Thursday, deputies posed as the girl to lure Verpaele to a parking lot in Satellite Beach where he was arrested.

"I know, having contact with him later on, he was very quiet and subdued about it and he understands the gravity of the situation," said Goodyear.

The principal at Viera High School said that, although no one else has come forward, he believes there could be other victims.

"Well I think it's pretty shocking and it's unbelievable that someone would do that," said student Marina Ummell.

Verpaele works as an engineer on Patrick Air Force Base.

He's been let go from his volunteer position with the Viera High School football team.

School leaders said a background check was conducted on him before he became a coach, but it came back clean.
