Report: Deputy used agency equipment to look through girlfriend's cellphone before murder-suicide

The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy who killed his longtime girlfriend and himself used department equipment to access pictures and video on his girlfriend’s cellphone hours before the shooting.

Deputy Daniel Carrero, 40, shot Mistie Reynolds, 33, last month behind an Osceola County gas station, and then turned the gun on himself, investigators said.

Carrero had worked for the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office for 16 years.

He and Reynolds were together for eight years and had developed relationship troubles.

Deputies said Thursday that on the day of the incident, Carrero violated the agency’s vehicle-use policy and used agency equipment to go through Reynolds’ phone.

A 43-page document details the last hours of Carrero’s life.

It shows the 16-year law enforcement member used his training to access his girlfriend’s password-protected cellphone.

The report said that on Aug. 12, the day of the shooting, that, “Danny came into the office and was working on a cellphone,” and that he asked his supervisor if he could leave early.

The report said less than three hours later, surveillance cameras recorded Carrero’s unmarked agency car pulling into a Kissimmee gas station, where he would eventually shoot Reynolds.

The agency said it will be thoroughly reviewing policies and procedures for the Digital Evidence Unit, and will implement any other safeguards needed to prevent misuse.

Deputies said Carrero, a father of three, showed no signs of distress and had no work performance issues prior to the shooting.

He used her personal weapon to carry out the murder-suicide, investigators said.
