Disney to allow guests to wear costumes in Magic Kingdom during Halloween season

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Halloween festivities were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Walt Disney World is still finding ways to allow guests to have a spooky good time.

For the first time, Walt Disney World will allow guests to wear costumes in Magic Kingdom during the Halloween season, with guidelines in place.

From Sept. 15 through Oct. 31, guests of all ages will be allowed to dress up in family-friendly costumes while in Magic Kingdom.

Guests 13 years old and younger may wear costumed masks as long as they “do not cover the entire face and provide unobstructed peripheral vision at all times with openings that allow the eyes to be fully seen,” Disney said.

For guests 14 years or older, costume masks are not permitted.

Several other guidelines have been set for guests who are at least 14 years old, according to Disney, including:

  • Layered costumes or costume props that surround the entire body are strongly discouraged, and may be subject to additional security screening.
  • Costumes such as full-length Princess dresses may not reach or drag on the ground.
  • Capes that do not go below the waist are permitted.
  • Acceptable accessories include transparent wings, plastic light sabers, toy swords and tutus.
  • Headwear that doesn’t cover your face may also be worn.

Disney said it reserves the right to deny admission or remove any guest wearing attire that is considered inappropriate.

Guests who choose to dress up as their favorite Disney characters are not allowed to pose for photos or sign autographs for other guests, Disney said.

Beginning Sept. 8, Disney will be reducing its park hours, with Magic Kingdom open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The announcement comes after Disney canceled Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party back in June due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Magic Kingdom will still offer Halloween-themed sweets and decorations throughout the parks.
