Permanent traffic shift onto elevated I-4 lanes in downtown Orlando begins Monday

The commute on Interstate 4 will be different Monday for some drivers.
The Florida Department of Transportation has permanently shifted a portion of I-4 in downtown Orlando as part of the I-4 Ultimate project.
Crews worked over the weekend to move east I-4 traffic between South Street and Lee Road to elevated lanes.
The shift is a milestone for the project, which has been underway since 2015.
Detailed look: Closures | Detours
The east exits in the stretch will be returned to what they were before construction started.
The lower east lanes will close temporarily, so the Florida Department of Transportation can configure them for traveling west.
Drivers traveling west will use the old lower east lanes so crews can demolish the current west lanes.
The section of I-4 has been plagued with issues over the years, including flooding, a cracked bridge support and the aforementioned broken pipe that caused a lane to collapse.
The lane that collapsed is slated to reopen Monday with the shift.
