ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — WFTV discovered that a former high school teacher is facing charges after police say he was having sex with one of his students.
Winter Garden police say Andrew Flavell, who's since resigned from his job at West Orange High School, had sex with a 15-year-old girl several times.
WFTV's Daralene Jones found out the girl's parents found text messages between the two after her parents and police ordered the 29-year-old to stay away from their teenage daughter.
Police said the teenager initially denied the relationship, until Saturday when her parents found the text messages from Flavell and took her cellphone to police.
Flavell is charged with one count of lewd or lascivious battery. But police said that may change depending on how many times they can prove the two had sex.
Flavell asked for a lawyer Monday night when he was confronted by police.
Investigators said the sexual relationship with the girl started in April when Flavell was her teacher at West Orange High School.
The teenager told police the two had sex 25 to 30 times, mostly at her home when her parents were working.
Deputies said the teenager said he left his wife and moved into a first floor apartment near her home.
"A 15-year-old is not able to consent to having a relationship with an adult. You have a 29-year-old suspect and a juvenile victim. It's inappropriate activity, period," said Winter Garden Police Sgt. Scott Allen.
Flavall is in the Orange County Jail on a $10,000 bail. He will also be placed on home confinement and a GPS monitoring device once he's released.
