VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla.,None — A Volusia County family, who looks after a home of disabled adults, has lost their own home in a fire.
The caregivers and their six children lived in a separate home behind the adult care home in Ormond Beach until it burned to the ground early Wednesday morning.
The family said it was a faulty microwave that caused the fire.
That small appliance catching on fire caused all this damage.
The fire was so hot, even the plastic siding melted on their neighbor's house.
"I just thank God that everything was A-OK," said fire victim Correan Reddin.
Reddin didn't shed a tear as she looked inside of her Ormond Beach home. It no longer has a roof and everything inside is ruined. But Reddin said she's thankful because her family, including six children, escaped the fire.
"When the fire truck got here, it was like smoking and all of a sudden it just bust out in flames," Reddin said.
There's a long list of what is lost, but Reddin said she is most upset about the Christmas presents she bought for her grandchildren and the two other children she'll soon be adopting.
"It hurts me to see the kids are going to be kind of hurt for Christmas. That's my problem," Reddin said.
The youngest is 3 years old and the oldest is 19-year-old Ashley Reddin, who told WFTV they don't have any clothing left.
"You can basically see right through the house. There's nothing left, no clothes, just what we got on our backs," said Reddin.
The fire nearly burned Reddin's home to the ground, but the house just in front of it was untouched. It's a group home where Reddin takes care of disabled adults.
In addition to the children, Reddin also had to evacuate the men and women as a precaution.
Officials said two children were treated for inhaling a small amount of smoke. There were no other injuries.
The American Red Cross said they are helping the family.
