SARASOTA, Fla. — The Boy Scouts of America is in the middle of a sexual controversy.
The father of a former scout from Sarasota is suing the organization for allegedly covering up multiple cases of sexual abuse, including the rape of his son.
The father didn't want to be identified, but he said the alleged sexual assault happened four years ago during an overnight trip when his son was 12 years old.
He said an adult caught the then 15-year-old senior patrol leader and his son during the sexual encounter, but never told either boy's parents.
The father is one of three families who have filed suit against the Boy Scouts for not releasing files which documented alleged abuse.
"Had they disseminated the information that we now know we have, these boys could have been armed with information, training and an idea of what to do if they we're confronted with such a scenario," said attorney Damian Mallard.
The senior patrol leader pleaded guilty to lesser charges in exchange for probation.
However, he's currently in prison for molesting a 6-year-old boy, following his time with the Boy Scouts.
The case is expected to go to trial in 2014.
The Boy Scouts responded in a written statement saying it can't comment on the lawsuit, but "the safety of our youth members is of paramount importance."
