ORLANDO, Fla. — A mother is grieving after she said her son died following a confrontation with Orlando police.

The confrontation happened in a shopping plaza on North Lane in Pine Hills, where police said they took the man into custody.

The chief of police said there is video of the confrontation.

Surveillance cameras outside the store will play a big part in piecing the investigation together.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been called in to investigate what happened at the shopping plaza.

“We’re looking at the officer’s body worn camera video, the store video,” Chief Orlando Rolon said.

Rolon said the man was taken into custody and suffered a medical episode following an encounter with an Orlando police officer.

“There was something going on to let the officer believe that he may have been involved in some type of drug activity,” Rolon said. “They provided Narcan. They actually did CPR on him.”

The man died at the hospital.

“They found control, a control substance on him and in him. Therefore, that may have played a role,” Rolon said.

Zericka Payne identified the man who died as her son, 31-year-old Isaih Payne.
