ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A brother and sister riding a bicycle were hit by a car that fled the scene in Orange County, said Florida Highway Patrol.
The incident happened on East Colonial Drive and Dean Road in front of Downey Park near a bus stop, troopers said.
FHP said Melanie Luque, 17, of Orlando was killed and Travis Luque Exposito, 18, was critically injured when they were thrown from the bike.
Authorities said they were searching for a black Mercedes with a missing hood ornament and front-end damage.
Friends told WFTV the two were very close, and they were hit as they were headed home around 3 a.m. Friday from a party.
"It's unreal. I don't believe it happened," said friend Aubrey Santiago.
Troopers said the pair was not in a crosswalk, but the driver kept going.
The owner of the Mercedes went into FHP headquarters with her lawyer Friday morning, FHP said.
"They weren't bad kids. That didn't deserve to happen to them," said a friend Natalie de Jesus. "You did something wrong, you killed someone and hurt another one."
The owner did not provide any information as to who was driving the vehicle, but did tell troopers where the 2008 Black Mercedes two-door was parked.
Troopers said they found the car in Orlando.
The Mercedes has damage that is consistent with the crash, FHP said.
The vehicle has been placed into FHP storage and will be processed for evidence.
At this time, troopers are not releasing any other information as this is an ongoing pending criminal investigation.
