Fire crews monitor smoldering Brevard wildfire near I-95

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla.,None — Fire crews are monitoring a smoldering wildfire in Brevard County that caused a 20-mile stretch of Interstate 95 to close.

The flames jumped over I-95 on Thursday and the Florida Highway Patrol was forced to shut down the busy interstate for more than an hour.

Officials said there are three big problems they are looking for: smoke, fog, and flare ups from the fire.

Luckily, officials have not seen any of those, and no homes were threatened by the flames.

Firefighters and state troopers are standing by to make sure smoke from the massive wildfire does not put anyone in danger.

The 100-acre fire started around 1 p.m. Thursday around Port St. John Parkway and then the flames started moving west.

Some of the firefighters were out in the brush with their hoses, and a helicopter unloaded foam on the fire.

It's only been one month since another fire tore through the area near I-95 and the Port St. John Parkway.

Nearby residents said they are worried about this wildfire flaring up again.

"We just got a new roof. I don't want that thing ruined," said Chris Hazel.

"What happened was it was getting closer and closer and closer, and ash was flying in our front yard," said Port St. John resident Chris Finlayson.

By Thursday evening, the fire was contained.

Officials still have not determined how the fire started.
