Firefighters battle brush fires in south Brevard County

PALM BAY, Fla. — Firefighters battled two brush fires in West Melbourne and Palm Bay Sunday, with one encroaching on homes.

Brevard County Fire Rescue had multiple trucks battling a brush fire at the intersection of Carriage Gate and Minton roads near I-95 in West Melbourne.

According to the Florida Forest Service, the fire is 25 acres and 70 percent contained.

The Forest Service also sent four bulldozers to help fight the fire.

Ron Fisher could see the smoke from his backyard.

"We've probably had a day and a half of rain in the last, I'd say, 30 to 40 days, so very, very dry back there," Fisher said.

The Palm Bay Fire Department battled a brush fire near homes south of J.A. Bombardier Boulevard between Hallendale and Madden Avenues.

No homes were damaged as of 5 p.m. but nearby residents were notified about the fire and some have self-evacuated, according to Sgt. Christian Van Zandt.

The cause of the fire is unknown and moderate winds were spreading embers and starting more fires, fire officials said.

Fire officials believe to have halted progress of the fire.
