Florida lawmakers approve bill to end unanimous jury recommendations for death penalty cases

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Florida House gave final approval to a bill that would eliminate a requirement for unanimous jury recommendations before judges can impose death sentences.

The measure was drafted after a jury did not unanimously recommend the death penalty for Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz.

Cruz was sentenced to life in prison instead.

Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to sign the bill.

However, opponents say it’ll likely face a constitutional challenge.
