CASSELBERRY, Fla. — A Central Florida nonprofit is offering free medical marijuana evaluations to hundreds of veterans as part of a statewide campaign tied to America’s 250th anniversary.
Veterans Cannabis Care, a Casselberry-based nonprofit, launched its “250 Veterans. 250 Years.” initiative Aug. 1 with a goal of helping 250 Florida veterans access the state’s medical marijuana program.
The eight-week campaign is being held through a partnership with Eden Curated Cannabis and Marijuana Express M.D., with events planned in Sarasota, Tampa, Orlando, Cocoa Beach and Casselberry.
The organization says it will cover the costs associated with qualifying for and obtaining a Florida medical marijuana card for participating veterans.
“For 250 years, generations of Americans have answered the call to serve this country,” Veterans Cannabis Care founder Robb Harmon said. “As we celebrate this historic anniversary, we wanted to find a meaningful way to give back to the men and women who defended the freedoms we enjoy today.”
Program aims to remove cost barriers
Veterans Cannabis Care says it has helped cover the costs of more than 1,000 medical marijuana cards since the organization was founded in 2021.
The nonprofit says veterans seeking its assistance often cite conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic pain, sleep problems and anxiety.
The organization maintains a waiting list of veterans seeking assistance and expects all 250 spots in the current campaign to be filled.
Veterans Cannabis Care and its partners have committed more than $19,000 toward the initiative, according to the organization.
Medical marijuana remains regulated under Florida law, and patients must meet state eligibility requirements before receiving a medical marijuana identification card.
How veterans can apply
Veterans interested in the program can find registration information on the Veterans Cannabis Care website.
The nonprofit said it is also seeking additional sponsors and donors to expand future programs.
“Success isn’t just filling 250 spots,” Harmon said. “Success is creating a movement that ensures veterans have access to the support and resources they deserve.”
