Florida saw more than 200 COVID-19 deaths, 6,000 new cases in week leading up to Phase 2 of reopening plan

ORLANDO, Fla. — Friday marks the first day bars, movie theaters and bowling alleys and Florida can reopen after more than two months of closures due to the coronavirus pandemic. It also marks the day the state reported that 53 more people had died and 1,305 more tested positive for the virus.

Friday’s numbers bring the Florida coronavirus death toll up to more than 200 over the past week. In the same time frame, health officials reported more than 6,000 new cases across the state.

Since the pandemic reached the state, a total of 61,488 people tested positive for the virus and 2,660 died from it, according to the Florida Department of Health.

Friday’s full county-by-county case numbers are below:

  • Orange: 2,210 (41 new cases since Thursday)
  • Osceola: 732 (6 new cases since Thursday)
  • Seminole: 515 (3 new cases since Thursday)
  • Volusia: 791 (7 new cases since Thursday)
  • Brevard: 439 (8 new cases since Thursday)
  • Flagler: 195 (2 new cases since Thursday)
  • Lake: 317 (4 new cases since Thursday)
  • Marion: 272 (11 new cases since Thursday)
  • Sumter: 261 (1 new case since Thursday)
  • Polk: 1,127 (27 new cases since Thursday)

Over the past week, Florida officials have reported a daily death toll from the virus varying from a high of 70 on Tuesday to a low of four on Sunday.

The total number of cases over the past week jumped from increases of between 600 and 700 on Monday and Tuesday to more than 1,000 each day since Wednesday.
