Former Bethune-Cookman football coach accused of NCAA violations

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The former head football coach at Bethune-Cookman University is under investigation by the National Collegiate Athletic Association for violations he may have committed while at the school.

In his four years of coaching at B-CU, Brian Jenkins helped turn things around for the football team. But Jenkins is now being accused of serious NCAA violations and an internal investigation at the school is also underway.
Jenkins abruptly left Bethune-Cookman University in December after getting a head coaching job at Alabama State University.

"I was wondering why he left to go to ASU so quick like that after we had a great season," student Derrick Young said.

Many BCU students told Channel 9 they were shocked to hear about the allegations.

"I thought he was one of the best coaches we had so far," Young said.

An Alabama newspaper interviewed former B-CU players and coaches, who claimed Jenkins paid illegal cash benefits to a player and improperly withheld scholarship money while at Bethune-Cookman. The newspaper also alleges that Jenkins used an ineligible football player during two games and violated practice limits.

The NCAA could not be reached for comment about its investigation. Bethune-Cookman University officials released a statement to Channel 9 regarding the allegations:

"During the fall semester of 2014, Bethune-Cookman University received information about allegations of possible violations of NCAA rules regarding our football program. We immediately notified the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) of this matter.

“B-CU has also launched an internal investigation which is ongoing in an effort to ensure and maintain compliance."
