VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A man who worked for the Volusia-Flagler YMCA program for more than ten years was arrested on child pornography charges, Channel 9 learned on Monday.
Herman Mitchell, 56, who worked at the DeLand YMCA location, was charged with four counts of possession of child pornography, according to his arrest affidavit.
Authorities said that Florida Department of Law Enforcement agents began an investigation into Mitchell's online activity in October 2014.
According to investigators, Mitchell was at his home when a warrant was served on Decemeber 12, and he told them he lived there alone. Authorities seized a desktop computer and allegedly found four images of child pornography that had been deleted from the computer.
Mitchell did mostly administrative work with the YMCA, but has held various positions over the years, the YMCA said. He resigned from his position shortly before the investigation began.
"We've got 400 employees and 399 of them are just as shocked about this, so I think we'll wait to see what happens," said Kevin Kilian, with the YMCA. "I think that it will heighten our resolve as a family. We'll stick to together, but we hope for the best."
Kilian said there were no reported incidents involving children at any of the YMCA branches where Mitchell worked.
Mitchell was booked into the Volusia County Jail, but he has since bonded out.
