Former St. Cloud mayor still owes thousands in liens for messy lawn

ST. CLOUD, Fla. — The former mayor of St. Cloud will never have to repay thousands of dollars to her own taxpayers, who have been footing the bill for her un-mowed yard.

Records show there are $6,000 worth of liens against Former Mayor Rebecca Borders’ home on Delaware Avenue.

The ex-mayor owned the home until recently. And right up until a bank foreclosed on it earlier this year, the city said she still wasn't mowing.

The liens were issued because her own city workers had to come out to make the property meet code.

The property has racked up even more liens since September of last year.

Neighbor Edward O'Neil never knew what to do.

"It's frustrating, might be better than aggravating. Because what are you going to do if you're aggravated except have a heart attack?” he said.

Last year, Borders said she couldn't pay because of a personal bankruptcy and needed permission from the court.

The bankruptcy is done, but not a dime has been paid.

"I don't really care to talk to you about anything,” she told Channel 9 reporter Field Sutton. “That's over. It's done and I don't really want to be bothered.”

The house was foreclosed upon, but Borders was the owner of record until last month.

Lawyers said she would have had to make sure it got mowed, but instead, taxpayers paid for it for years.

Borders said she considers the matter done.
