GM recalls thousands of police, sheriff vehicles

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Thousands of police and sheriff's office vehicles were recalled because of a defect that could cause an accident.

General Motors said a part in the front suspension of the Chevy Impala police cruisers can crack, causing them to crash.

WFTV went to the Orange County Sheriff's Office on Sunday night. The parking lot was filled with Impalas. The cruisers are what many of the 1,400 deputies drive every single day and it's a similar story for Orlando police.

Documents showed GM is recalling more than 36,000 of the cars because of defects that could cause them to crash.

"That's unsafe for everybody," said resident Glendah Warner.

The recall affects models from 2008 to 2012. According to documents, the problem is the lower control arm in the suspension, which can fracture, and cause the driver to lose control of the car, especially at high rates of speed.

"It's very dangerous, for us and them. Just like pulling people over, what if they couldn't stop and hit the person that's in front of them," said Warner.

The recall will impact law enforcement agencies across Central Florida and the country.

GM said it will soon notify owners and dealers and will replace the part for free.

Orange County deputies could not immediately tell WFTV how many vehicles will be affected.
