TITUSVILLE, Fla. — Heavy overnight rainfall overwhelmed parts of Titusville’s wastewater system, forcing the city to release treated reclaimed water into the Indian River Lagoon.

The city said the release began around 6:30 a.m. near the Osprey Water Reclamation Facility after flows between the Osprey and Blue Heron facilities reached full capacity.

Utility crews exhausted available options to manage the increased flow, according to the city.

Officials said the release was necessary to prevent wastewater from backing up into homes, businesses and streets.

The city emphasized that the water being released is not raw sewage. It has gone through the facility’s treatment process, including filtration and disinfection, before entering the lagoon.

Still, some residents expressed concern about the release and the flooding caused by the heavy rain.

“I don’t like the idea of them pumping into the river,” resident Kerry Woodward said.

Woodward said she has lived in the area for about 30 years and is seeing flooding in places she has never seen before.

“I see places flooding that I’ve never seen flooding, and I’ve been down here for 30 years. So, I am very uncomfortable,” she said.

The city said it is notifying the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and conducting required water-quality testing. Officials are also asking residents to limit nonessential water use until further notice to reduce pressure on the system.

That includes holding off on laundry, running dishwashers and taking long showers.

The city said the release will continue as needed to prevent wastewater backups while the system manages the excess flow.

Residents are being asked to conserve water until further notice.
