Huge gator caught on cellphone video walking across resident's yard

SOUTH FLORIDA — Residents in a south Florida neighborhood took cellphone video of a huge alligator walking across their yard.

A mother and her 12-year-old son shot from the safety of their car.

Wildlife officials estimate the gator was at least 15 years old.

Neighbors said they've seen gators in the canals, but they've never seen them on land.

"Normally, they'll move around throughout the storm drain, so, you don't see them walking across on land. But they do. It's not uncommon for them," said Stuart Spoede of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.

Eventually, the gator headed into a nearby canal.

A wildlife officer said it looked so big because it probably had just eaten.
