Human skull, 30 other bones found at New Smyrna Beach historical site

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — New Smyrna Beach investigators found 30 bones, including a human skull, in the wooded area of a historical site on Tuesday.

Police said an archeologist employed by the city of New Smyrna Beach located the bone around 9 a.m. while they were working in a documented historical site in the area of 1700 North Dixie Freeway.

When officers and the Volusia County Medical Examiner investigators arrived, they were able to find a total of 30 bones, including a human skull.

Officers said the identity, race, and sex of the individual is unknown and the investigation is ongoing. Police said they’ll use DNA to try to identify the person and detectives are working toward identifying a cause of death.
