BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Hundreds of people gathered at Cocoa Riverpoint Park on Saturday morning to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia at the “Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s”.
The event highlights a health issue impacting more than 7 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s, a progressive brain disease that affects memory, thinking, and behavior. Across Florida, the condition affects one in eight residents age 65 and older.
In Brevard County, an estimated 17,600 residents over age 65 are living with Alzheimer’s disease. That total represents 11.8% of the county’s population in that age bracket.
Participants at the event walked through the park holding Promise Garden flowers, with each color signifying a specific connection to dementia.
Blue flowers represented individuals living with the disease, yellow flowers honored caregivers, purple flowers remembered loved ones lost, and orange flowers displayed support for a future without Alzheimer’s.
