Hundreds line up for free food give away in Sumter County

SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. — Hundreds of families in need in Sumter county got some much needed help thanks to a free food giveaway Thursday.

The drive through event was held by the Society of Saint Andrews church and Farm Share, the state’s largest food bank.

Residents lined up at New Covenant United Methodist Church in Wildwood to receive free bags of food.

Janine Rogers with the New Covenant United Methodist Church said that since the start of the pandemic, more and more families need help.

“There are many families within the local community, many who lost their jobs, many who are still seeking employment and so it is our desire to be able to support those in need within our local community,” Rogers said.

Organizers said they plan to hold two more food distribution events this weekend at the following locations:

Founded in 1991, Farm Share has been providing food to those in need by recovering crops from Florida farmers.
