ORLANDO, Fla. — A judge has annulled the 25-year marriage of the Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Rep. Alan Grayson and Lolita Grayson.
In his two-page order Tuesday, Judge Bob LeBlanc said the marriage is void since Lolita Grayson was married to another man at the time of her wedding to Alan Grayson in 1990.
The judge dismissed Lolita Grayson's divorce petition but retained jurisdiction on other matters.
The couple had agreed to get the annulment in April after an acrimonious, public legal battle.
In previous court filings, Alan Grayson has asked that his four minor children, ages 10 to 16, live with him. Lolita Grayson has asked for shared parental responsibility and child support.
Lolita Grayson accused the congressman of hiding money, possibly in off-shore accounts.
She claims the congressman knew for decades that she was married to someone else at the time of their wedding.
The new documents did not stop the judge from annulling the marriage.
Lolita Grayson said she lied to him for almost 30 years about her divorce, and said he lied about not finding out about it until recently.
She is accusing the congressman of possible perjury and possibly masterminding a massive fraud, saying in court documents, there’s a “very real possibility” he knew she was not divorced before their wedding and is trying to “benefit from his own deceit.”
The motion said Alan Grayson helped Lolita Grayson with her citizenship efforts, but claims not noticing she listed “separated” as her marital status on the 1989 certificate of naturalization and insinuated he hired a divorce attorney four years later.
“The law is on his side. The facts are on his side. To defame him publicly, to disparage him publicly by a scorned ex-roommate because she wasn’t his wife is maybe all they’ve got left,” said attorney Mark Nejame.
Lolita Grayson’s attorney also argued accounts and stock records have not been disclosed, naming The Grayson Fund Cayman LTD, among other assets.
“There is no marriage, so stop acting and claiming that it makes any difference,” said Nejame.
Lolita Grayson claims Grayson is trying to keep her from possibly hundreds of millions.
“If a judge finds one of the parties has unclean hands, they’re going to suffer for that,” said WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer.
Sheaffer said it is not likely based on what’s in the new motion and that any criminal investigation would be opened. He said the attacks are mainly aimed at Grayson’s wallet.
Divorce court papers said Grayson has a personal wealth of around $30 million.
