Judge sentences accused prostitute in Brevard deputy shooting

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — An accused prostitute who was arrested after a Brevard County Sheriff's Office agent was shot was sentenced Monday.

Mary Derosett, 42, was sentenced to six months in jail and six months of probation after pleading no contest to prostitution and resisting arrest.

The woman's uncle, John Derossett, 65, is accused of shooting BCSO Agent Casey Smith multiple times Aug. 21 during a prostitution bust at the Derosett's Port Saint John home.

Deputies traveled to the home on Corvina Street in search of Mary Derossett after receiving complaints that she was running a prostitution ring.

The prostitution bust was prompted by the robbery and the killing of a citizen who was lured by a prostitute, the Sheriff's Office said.

In exchange for her no contest plea, Mary Derossett could be released from jail within 2½ months because she has already served time.

The woman's attorneys argued that she resisted arrest and yelled for help because she had no idea that the people arresting her were law-enforcement officers.

John Derossett asked a judge last year to commit his niece to a mental institution for fear her drug addiction would kill her, court records said. His request was denied.

During a Sept. 13 news conference, Sheriff Wayne Ivey announced that he fired two deputies after evidence was found that they were clients of Mary Derossett.

John Derossett remains jailed on attempted-murder charges.

Smith was released from a hospital last Wednesday.
