PANAMA CITY BEACH, Florida — A Kentucky teenager suspected of embarking on a crime spree across the South with his 13-year-old girlfriend will make his first court appearance Monday in the Florida Panhandle.

According to Bay County jail records, 18-year-old Dalton Hayes was held Sunday on a charge of custodial interference. He is scheduled for a first court appearance at 8:30 a.m. Monday.

Authorities plan to extradite the teens back to Kentucky, where they are expected to face felony charges.

A Florida Department of Children & Familes spokeswoman says Hayes' girlfriend, Cheyenne Phillips, has been "taken to a safe location" until arrangements are made to return her to her family.

Authorities say the couple was arrested without incident early Sunday in Panama City Beach after being found sleeping in a stolen vehicle.
