LEESBURG, Fla. — A Vietnam Veterans Memorial monument at Veterans Memorial Park in Leesburg fell on or before Aug. 10. City officials and contractors are working to re-erect the structure, which is valued at about $2,500.
The monument stands at 200 Orange Ave. Although it is owned by a veterans association rather than the city, Leesburg is assisting with restoration.
A Leesburg employee found the toppled monument during an inspection and reported it to police, noting that it had probably fallen the weekend before.
Police found no tire marks, handprints, or footprints near the site, and the stones showed no obvious damage. Investigators cited heavy rainstorms that weekend as a possible factor.
City Manager Al Minner said a structural joint failure likely caused the collapse, not broken stone. “We are working with TJ Southern Monument to repair the wall. We believe the joint failed, which is why the stones fell.
Luckily, they did not break,” Minner said, adding that the monuments have been failing for about three weeks and remain under warranty. “Technically, the monuments are not the City’s, they are the Vets Association, but we are helping them. We hope to have them back up in the next week or so.”
