LAKE HELEN, Fla. — Lake Helen remains under a boil water notice after a second test confirmed the presence of E. coli bacteria in the municipal water supply
The positive test results appeared in raw water samples rather than at distribution sites throughout the community.
Before officials can lift the notice, the city must record two consecutive days of negative test results across six testing sites. The advisory could remain in effect until Friday, Sept. 18.
E. coli first detected Saturday
The city received its first positive test result for E. coli on Saturday, Sept. 12, prompting officials to issue the boil water advisory.
To support residents during the advisory, the city distributed cases of bottled water. City staff are working to acquire additional pallets for another giveaway in the coming days.
Lake Helen has experienced previous water quality complaints over the years, including reports of discolored water, odor and taste.
Cause remains under investigation
Lake Helen City Administrator John Brant said officials have not determined how the bacteria entered the water supply.
“At this point we do not,” Brant said. “We have asked U.S. Water, but we don’t have any idea.”
Brant also said there is currently no proof connecting their systems to the contamination.
“Absolutely no, there is no proof of that whatsoever right now,” Brant said.
To address long-term water infrastructure needs, city officials are seeking government funding.
“We have federal grants and are working to get some other SRF grants,” Brant said. “We are doing anything possible.”
When could the boil water notice be lifted?
The advisory will remain in place until Lake Helen secures the required consecutive negative test results across all six designated testing locations.
The City of Lake Helen is posting updates on its website as testing continues.
City officials also plan to announce details for the next public water distribution once additional shipments arrive.
