Lakeland man charged in car crash that killed 3

LAKELAND, Fla. — A central Florida man faces several charges in a car crash that killed three people and seriously injured another.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office said Edward McCoy of Lakeland was arrested Thursday on three counts of vehicular homicide and three counts of driving under the influence causing death, among other charges.

An affidavit said McCoy's blood-alcohol level was 0.234. Florida's legal limit is 0.08.

It wasn't known Friday whether McCoy had an attorney.

The sheriff's office said McCoy's speeding pickup truck collided in a Lakeland intersection early Sunday with a car carrying four people.

Dorothy Operhall of Mulberry and her common-law husband, Leonard Simmons, died at the scene.

Melinda Helbig of Rochester, Pa., also died at the scene. The sheriff's office said Helbig's husband remains hospitalized with serious injuries.
