Unemployment recipients will have to claim number of weeks they need benefits

9:15 p.m. update

Starting Monday, people filing for unemployment will have to go back to claiming the number of weeks they need benefits.

Weeks ago, Gov. Ron DeSantis waived the requirement to log in every two weeks to prove people still need unemployment benefits and that they have searched for work.

It was done to help relieve some of the traffic to the troubled website.

According to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, weeks have to be claimed to comply with federal requirements.

One woman Channel 9 spoke with has not received the pin number required to take that step.

With a rent increase forcing her to move out, she said she is desperate for help.

The website is down for scheduled maintenance but it should be back up by Monday at 8 a.m.


Orange County offering expanded COVID-19 testing sites

6:50 p.m. update

Orange County leaders are offering expanded testing for some ZIP codes.

Residents in 32822, 32825 and 32792 can get tested at the following locations with an appointment:

  • Legacy Middle School - Monday through Tuesday.
  • Lakemont Elementary School - Monday through Thursday.
  • Venture Elementary School.

Orange County offering small businesses free PPE

4 p.m. update

Orange County is offering small businesses free personal protective equipment.

The county is providing equipment kits for up to 20,000 small businesses to assist in reopening and sustaining business operations.

Community Health Centers offering drive-thru COVID-19 testing in Apopka

3:49 p.m. update

Community Health Centers is offering drive-thru COVID-19 testing in Apopka.

Officials said the tests will be distributed Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 210 E 7th Street in Apopka.

Appointments are required and can be made by calling 407-905-8827, officials said.


No new COVID-19 deaths in Central Florida

1:25 p.m. update

Florida health officials reported 595 new cases of the coronavirus since Saturday and six more COVID-19-related deaths, but none of the deaths were in Central Florida.

There are now a total of 40,596 reported cases of coronavirus in the state and 1,721 deaths related to the virus.

Orange and Brevard counties reported no new cases since Saturday, and Flagler County reported no new cases since Friday.

Mall at Millenia reopening

11:20 a.m. update

The Mall at Millenia will reopen Monday morning, operating at 25% indoor capacity.

Restaurants will offer indoor seating at that same capacity as well as outdoor seating with tables spaced six feet apart.

Officials said there will be improved housekeeping protocols and new safety guidelines for employees to follow.

The mall will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.


Free testing in Brevard County

8:35 a.m. update

Free COVID-19 testing will begin Monday in Brevard County for those who believe they might have contracted the virus.

Residents are not required to be symptomatic, but appointments are necessary and can be scheduled by calling 321-454-7141.

Orange County curfew

6:40 a.m. update

Orange County’s nightly curfew will be lifted early Monday.

The curfew went into effect in March and has run from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily.

Deputies said they have arrested few people for violating curfew.

Nursing home, assisted living facility deaths

5:35 a.m. update

Florida is reporting that more than 650 patients have died from the coronavirus at the state’s nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

The Florida Department of Health released figures late Friday showing that 656 patients and eight employees have died at long-term care facilities in the state.

That’s almost 40% of the state’s 1,669 confirmed deaths from COVID-19.

One facility near St. Petersburg has had 23 deaths with 13 others in Florida reporting at least 10.

People over 65 and those with underlying health conditions are particularly endangered by the disease, making nursing homes especially vulnerable to outbreaks.

The state now has more than 40,000 confirmed cases of the disease.
