Long hair, don't care: Mina reacts to Jamie Holmes' viral post about son's long locks

ORLANDO, Fla. — A social media post by WFTV anchor Jamie Holmes about self-love and acceptance has gained the attention of Orlando police Chief John Mina.

Holmes’ Facebook post on Tuesday praised his son’s choice to keep his hair long, despite what others may think.

The post struck a chord with hundreds of people and was shared nearly 2,000 times.

“Truth is, he got a bad haircut last year, and the barber cut him. He's been too nervous to sit in the chair ever since, and I'm hard pressed to force him,” the post said. “Also, what impresses me the most is how he handles his critics, which will be plentiful in life. For example, he was at the grocery with his sister. A man pushing his cart said, ‘Excuse me girls,’ as he passed. And my son turned to his sister, and said, ‘Did you hear that? He called YOU a girl!’”

Hundreds of fans commented on the post, with many sharing pictures of their sons’ long hair.

On Wednesday, Mina weighed in as well, sharing with Holmes his high school picture in which his hair was long.

Holmes took to social media to write about his son’s reaction to Mina's picture.

“I showed my son, who wants to be a police officer one day. He jumped up and ran through the house searching for his big sister. ‘Guess what?’ he excitedly proclaimed. ‘The police chief likes my hair!!!!’’ the post said.

Holmes said the chief’s support meant a lot to “a long-haired little boy.”
