MAITLAND, Fla.,None — An intersection in Altamonte Springs may have played a role in the death of a Seminole County deputy, WFTV learned on Wednesday.
Deputy Matt Miller was killed in December when his motorcycle crashed into a car on Maitland Boulevard and Gateway Drive.
Residents said they have been complaining for years that it's a dangerous intersection.
On Wednesday, WFTV was told that the intersection could be closed down.
In official transportation video, a black truck is shown making a left turn onto Gateway Drive, moments before another truck whizzes past him.
It's the same turn that the Florida Highway Patrol said the driver of a Jetta made in Miller's path.
Miller, however, crashed into the car and died.
"Eventually, someone was going to make that fatal mistake," said resident Kenneth Hoeflich.
Hoeflich lives nearby and said he has seen countless near-collisions at that intersection.
In fact, Hoeflich said he wrote a letter to the Florida Department of Transportation two years ago about the dangers of the intersection.
"Personally, I think this intersection should be closed," said Hoeflich.
FDOT's response to Hoeflich was, "It would consider closing the intersection entirely should a safety problem develop."
"Is there a safety problem at this intersection?" WFTV reporter Bianca Castro asked.
"We do not see a significant safety problem at this intersection," said April Heller of the Florida Department of Transportation.
However, Miller's crash makes it the fifth accident at the intersection in two years, according to records.
FDOT said it will consider changing, possibly closing the intersection, if the intersection was a factor in the fatal crash.
FHP said it will take about six weeks to finish its report on Miller's death.
