ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — An Orange County man is on trial after police said he beat an elderly man to death for a television during a home invasion.
Police said Esteban Calderon, 67, was found by his brother nearly four years ago in his home along Greystone Trail. Calderon would die three days later at the hospital.
James Calderon, the victim’s brother who said he found Calderon body bloodied, disfigured and disoriented, faced the accused killer in court on Tuesday.
"His face was bloody, swollen and the shirt he had on was just full of blood. It was a frightening scene," James Calderon said.
Victor Wriden was 16 years old at the time of the invasion, but prosecutors said he was the mastermind behind the plan. Prosecutors said Calderon's death was not part of the plan when Wriden asked his friends to help and that he did that on his own.
Prosecutors said Wriden's friends turned on him right after the murder out of anger and shock.
"Everything comes back, even after almost four years. It's almost like being back at the scene at the present moment, and that was a very emotional, fearful moment and that just overcomes you," James Calderon said.
Prosecutors said Wriden wanted Calderon's new 42-inch flat-screen television so he could sell it. His friends testified against him as part of a plea deal.
