VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A 41-year-old Connecticut man was arrested after fleeing law enforcement and crashing into two vehicles while driving the wrong way on State Road 44 near Interstate 95.
Scott Taylor faces charges of fleeing and eluding, driving without a license, and leaving the scene of a crash following the incident.
The incident began at approximately 12:32 p.m. when the Sanford Regional Communications Center relayed a reckless driving alert for a vehicle traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 1 near Airport Road in Ormond Beach. A witness reported that the car ran a red light and nearly caused a collision.
Volusia Sheriff’s Office deputies and the Florida Highway Patrol spotted the 2013 Ford Focus near State Road 44 and County Road 415 and attempted a traffic stop with lights and sirens activated. The driver refused to pull over and continued traveling recklessly, heading eastbound in the westbound lane of State Road 44 toward Interstate 95.
During the pursuit, the Ford Focus struck the right side of a 2005 dump truck that had stopped in the westbound lane for law enforcement. The car then veered off the road to the left, hit a traffic sign, and continued traveling the wrong way before colliding with the front right of a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado.
Neither the driver of the dump truck, a 77-year-old man from DeLand, nor the driver of the Silverado, a 61-year-old man from Oviedo, was injured in the collisions. Following the final crash, the driver attempted to flee on foot but was immediately detained by law enforcement at the scene.
Taylor was taken to Halifax Hospital for medical clearance and will then be booked into the Volusia County Jail upon his release. Authorities confirmed that the roadblock in the area has since been cleared.
