Man gets 10 1/2 years for fatal DUI crash

Michael Johnson

POLK COUNTY, Fla. — A Bartow man was sentenced to 10 1/2 years in prison for a drunken driving crash that left a woman dead.

As part of a deal with Polk County prosecutors, Michael Johnson, 56, pleaded no contest Monday to DUI manslaughter.

Authorities said Johnson was driving his pickup truck on U.S. 27 near Interstate 4 in October 2013 when he ran a red light and crashed into a car driven by Sandra Marin, 52.

Authorities said Johnson initially refused a blood draw to determine his level of impairment, but a medical draw was taken about seven hours after the crash. The test showed his blood-alcohol level to be 0.11 percent. Florida law considers a driver impaired at 0.08 percent.
