Mayor of Melbourne Beach resigns

MELBOURNE BEACH, Fla. — The town of Melbourne Beach announced Tuesday morning that Mayor Tom Davis has resigned.

In his resignation letter Davis said, "I believe I can no longer effectively serve the interests of the people and employees in Melbourne Beach with the current open tensions among the Commission. I cannot passively watch unjust actions, as I am a person of honor and respect."

Davis did not offer details on what moved him to resign.

He went on to say that he hoped "a change in leadership, may encourage a new decorum."

The city said the resignation is effective immediately.

According to the city, Vice Mayor Rocco Maglio will fill the Davis' spot until the city election Nov. 5, 2013, when a new mayor will be elected to complete Davis' term, which runs until Nov. 4, 2013.
