ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A Windermere police officer who was killed in the line of duty one year ago was remembered Saturday evening during a memorial service.
The small town held a candlelight memorial for Officer Robert German at 6:45 p.m. Saturday at the Windermere Police Department.
"We lost a man who took such pride in being a police officer," said Mayor Gary Bruhn. "Not just a police officer -- a Windemere police officer."
Officers unveiled a memorial plaque honoring his service and sacrifice.
A second event planned for Sunday will help raise money to support German’s family and other families of fallen officers.
The Officer Robert “Robbie” German Memorial Softball Tournament and Family Fun Day will be held from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Braddock Park in Winter Garden.
German was honored with a posthumous Purple Heart last month.
He was shot and killed after stopping two teenagers who had been reported missing while on patrol on Horizon Court and Conroy Windermere Road.
Brandon Goode, 18, and his girlfriend, Alexandra Hollinghurst, took their own lives after killing German, authorities said.
