MELBOURNE, Fla. — A new era of aviation has begun at Melbourne International Airport, where Midair USA is now providing maintenance, mechanical service and retrofitting some of the largest aircraft service.
Midair USA began operations Thursday, with the arrival of the first 747-400 aircraft, which will be modified in Melbourne.
“This is the first time that we can house the 747-400,” said Nathan Ware, of MidairUSA.
On Thursday, the Federal Aviation Administration did a final check of MidairUSA’s new 83,000 square-feet hangar where a Boeing 747-400 was gently towed into place.
“We will do heavy maintenance on this aircraft and do some interior modifications to prepare it for service with the airline,” Ware said.
The carpet and most of the seating has been removed from the aircraft.
The overhead bins will be removed as well, so there can be an interior inspection of the aircraft structure.
“This facility that the MIA and MidairUSA have worked so hard on together will allow us to bring possibly 100 jobs to the Space Coast and make this a maintenance hub,” Ware said.
MidairUSA officials said there aren’t many facilities around the country that can handle the type of maintenance they perform so they expect there will be a demand.
