Mitt Romney campaigns at The Villages

THE VILLAGES, Fla.,None — GOP presidential frontrunner Mitt Romney spoke in The Villages on Tuesday.

Romney has a lot of ground to cover in Central Florida.

Recent head-to-head match-ups have Romney and President Barack Obama near a dead heat, which is why the Republican candidate spoke at The Villages, hoping to grab some swing state voters.

Romney is fighting to keep the frontrunner spot among his fellow Republicans.

"I will fix Washington. I will get it on track again," Romney said.

Lorraine Stripp is an undecided voter.  She drove from Orlando to hear what Romney had to say.

"I still will look at who is going to be in the race and who lasts, but I would be for change if it were Donald Duck excuse me," Stripp said.

The retirement community is a high impact campaign stop for Republican candidates. There are many senior citizens who show up at the poll and they often vote Republican. But a few people still brought signs to protest Romney and his stance on Medicare, social security, and the economy.

"We do not need Herbert Hoover economics all over again. We tried it in the 1930s, it didn't work too well then," said The Villages resident Preston Davis.

"We need conservativism in this country. We need to get people back to work and I think he is the man to do it," resident Shirley Ross said.

Compared to his fellow Republicans, Romney is doing well in Florida.

The former Massachusetts governor is in the lead with 27 percent.

Atlanta businessman Herman Caine is two points behind that, and Texas Governor Rick Perry is trailing with 13 percent.

However, the latest head-to-head match-up for the general election still has Romney behind the president by 1 percent, which doesn't have the Romney-friendly crowd worried.
