It’s a new program to audit the safety measures at apartments.

Investigators said apartment maintenance worker Armando Caballero used a master key fob to get into Marcano’s unit at Arden Villas Apartments, killed her, and then took his own life before he could be arrested.

If complexes sign up for the Safe and Secure Program, the program will allow them to audit apartments to be sure the correct measures are being taken to protect tenants, based on a rating system of one, two and three butterflies.

The program will look into measures like camera systems, lighting, deadbolts and a master key log system at apartments.

Based on the size of the complex, the accreditation could cost between $2,500 and $7,500.

“We’ve talked to several apartment complexes, and their cost is nominal compared to the lives they are supposed to protect each day,” said Jodi Lewis with the Miya Marcano Foundation.

Once complexes sign up, you’ll be able to find a list of those participating on the Miya Marcano Foundation website, and search each complex’s ratings by ZIP code.

Marcano’s mom, Yma Scarbriel, said she hopes it brings peace as more people move to Central Florida.

“We didn’t have it for Miya, but I’m finding comfort in knowing that complexes are taking initiative to have this program,” she said.

The foundation also successfully helped push Miya’s Law through the last session. The bill is now on the governor’s desk.
