More construction on Central Florida roads, more cracked windshields

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Some commuters in Central Florida say a drive through construction zones left them with busted, cracked windshields.

A manager of a local repair shop told Channel 9’s Len Kiese that a construction boom and window damage go hand-in-hand.

Mark Dean said he just had his windshield cracked while driving during a construction zone.

“A rock truck passed me and next thing I know, heard a loud pop,” Dean said.

Jonathan Walsh, who helps run Safelite AutoGlass in Orlando. He told Eyewitness News that business is up more than 20 percent with many customers blaming a drive through construction areas as the cause.

"(There is) a lot of road construction going on right now. Summertime is a busy time. A lot of cars on the road, people on vacation,” Walsh said.

There are at least 50 road construction projects in Central Florida, according to Florida’s Department of Transportation website.

If a driver believes they received damage to their vehicle from an FDOT construction project, they can file a claim here.

Last year, 864 people filed claims to be reimbursed for property damage. So far this year, 689 people have filed claims.
