ORLANDO, Fla. — After a historic round of rainfall triggered flooding across parts of Central Florida on Monday, additional showers and storms are bringing more concerns for residents Tuesday.
Rain is being tracked across portions of Brevard, Volusia and Flagler counties, with scattered showers and thunderstorms expected to continue inland throughout the afternoon.
While coastal communities should see drier conditions as the day progresses, inland residents may need to keep an umbrella nearby.
That includes anyone heading out to vote, as passing showers could make for a wet trip to the polls.
Flooding concerns in Brevard County are expected to remain elevated through midmorning Tuesday. Additional rainfall has fallen in the area, and a flood warning remains in effect until 9:30 a.m.
Monday’s rainfall was especially significant in Melbourne, where 11.51 inches of rain fell, setting a new daily rainfall record.
That total easily surpassed the previous daily record of 1.64 inches, set in 2008. It also shattered Melbourne’s previous November rainfall record of 5.45 inches, which had stood since 1977 for the entire month.
The 11.51-inch rainfall total also broke Melbourne’s all-time daily rainfall record of 10.23 inches, set in September 2017 during one of the area’s wettest weather events.
For perspective, Melbourne typically receives 50.79 inches of rain over an entire year.
The highest official rainfall total reported by the National Weather Service from Monday’s event was 23.69 inches in Grant-Valkaria.
The good news is that a much drier weather pattern is expected to move in beginning Wednesday.
Dry conditions are forecast to continue Thursday and Friday, offering a welcome break after several days of heavy rainfall and flooding concerns.
For now, residents in flood-prone areas should remain alert, monitor changing weather conditions and use caution on roads where standing water may remain.
