Water main break floods Palm Bay neighborhood and forces road closures

City crews were unable to make any repairs because of the weather

PALM BAY, Fla. — A massive water main break in a Palm Bay neighborhood flooded streets and roads, leaving them impassable Monday afternoon.

Drivers were stranded along Clearmont Street near Port Malabar Boulevard Northeast as water continued to inch closer to nearby homes. Several drivers made detours while others plowed through the standing water, undeterred by a stalled-out car stuck on a nearby median.

“I’m very close to the house, right around the corner, but I can’t go through,” said Mike Maillet, who lives nearby. “I’ve been out since like 7.45 this morning, trying to come home from work.

City crews were unable to make any repairs because of the weather. Some homeowners walked through the water to get to their destination. Randolph Ryan rode a bicycle to his stalled-out car. “I’m going to check on my car that’s stuck on Palm Bay Road,” said Ryan. “That’s why I’m riding my bike.”

By Monday evening, the water appeared to have been shut off, and roads were passable. It’s unclear if the city was able to shut the water off or if crews were able to make significant repairs.

Some residents had their water shut off by the city. After the water is turned back on, a boil water advisory will be issued.
