ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — NASA sent out letters warning 2,300 employees about a stolen laptop on Monday.
Officials said the laptop was stolen from an employee's car outside their home in Orange County on March 5.
"Turned out it was a much wider scope. Had much more sensitive information on it," said NASA spokesman Allard Beutel.
The computer contained thousands of NASA workers' social security numbers.
Officials said the employee works for NASA's human resources department.
NASA said it the theft appeared to be random, and it will spend $100,000 to provide the 2,300 employees with a year of security protection.
NASA computers; 48 were lost or stolen between April 2009 and April 2011.
