New Spacecraft will bring 150 jobs to Space Coast

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll announced on Thursday that a new spacecraft that will be built and assembled in Brevard County will bring 150 jobs to the Space Coast.

The new spacecraft is more like a space plane than the space shuttle; it will take off and will land horizontally like a jet.

X-Cor Aerospace announced it will be establishing a base at the Kennedy Space Center.

The company is headquartered out of Mojave, California, but the company plans to start flying the Lynx Suborbital demonstration plane in 2014 for Pathfinder flights.

Eventually, the company said it plans to have four launches or suborbital trips a day from the old shuttle runway. It also plans to build more space planes there.

"Really, the key that made this standout was the workforce," said Jeff Greason of X-Cor Aerospace.

Local leaders said they believe the daily flights will boost tourism. The frequent trips to space will entice other technological industries to the area, and bring the wealthy who want to take a ride on the space plane.

Eventually, the company said it hopes to build a fully reusable space plane that can remain in orbit.
