OCALA. Fla. — A central Florida police department will soon be issuing body cameras to its officers.
The Ocala City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved spending $130,775 to buy 130 cameras to be worn by police officers and city code enforcement officers.
Video cameras already are installed in officers' patrol cars. Motorcycle officer already were wearing the cameras because other cameras were too large to mount on their bikes.
Police Chief Greg Graham tells Ocala Star-Banner that the cameras add transparency and are "just a better way of policing."
Florida Police Chiefs Association executive director Amy Mercer says more municipalities are considering issuing body cameras. Daytona Beach Police have had about 60 wearable cameras for nearly two years, and the department wants to buy enough for all its 200 officers.
