Officers shoot, kill unarmed man at ORMC claiming to have gun, police say

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando police have identified the man who claimed to have a weapon inside Orlando Regional Medical Center.

Officers shot and killed Brian Baker, 33, when he made aggressive movements toward officers Monday morning, Orlando police Chief John Mina said. Three officers fired at Baker.

Police said Baker did not have a weapon.

Baker was transported to the hospital Monday around 6 a.m. with a medical condition, Mina said.

At some point, Baker told staff he had a gun and he would shoot anyone who came near him, police said.

"He made a lot of statements about how 'it's going to end right here, today,'" Mina said.

Mina said crisis negotiators had tried to get the man to surrender peacefully.

Investigators said Monday afternoon that Baker had a bus ticket showing he was traveling from West Palm Beach to Kentucky and was on a layover in Orlando.

The officers who discharged their firearms have been placed on temporary paid administrative leave, which is normal for police-involved shootings, police said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.

No one else was hurt.
