FHP: Woman killed, teen critical in hit-and-run

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.,None — A woman was killed and a teenager is in the hospital after a hit-and-run crash in an Altamonte Springs neighborhood, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said 16-year-old Jorge Orlando Ardoleda Jr. and 22-year-old Carmen Lydia Martinez were lying at the end of a driveway on La Salle Drive at around 9:00 p.m. on Monday when the crash happened.

Officials said the unknown driver was traveling westbound on La Salle Drive and struck both Ardoleda and Martinez. Neighbors told WFTV the car that hit them was a silver car, possibly an SUV. Officials are still trying to determine that.

Luis Perez lives two doors down. He told WFTV he heard the commotion and went outside to find both of them unresponsive.

"I couldn't even go to sleep," Perez said.

Neighbors said the driver was speeding when the two were hit.

"Someone came around the corner speeding too quickly and ran them over," said neighbor Keith Hamel.

"His mom was crying, everybody was crying," said friend, Luis Perez.

They were rushed to Orlando Regional Medical Center, but Martinez died en-route to the hospital, investigators said.

Investigators  said Ardoleda is in critical condition. Perez told WFTV that Ardoleda is paralyzed from the waist down.

Neighbors told WFTV the road is sometimes used as a cut through for SR-434 and SR-436, and drivers will go 50 or 60 miles per hour.

"Traffic problems like this, they've really been something. We've been petitioning the county for 20 years and nothing gets done," said Hamel.

"It was an accident waiting to happen," Perez said.

The hit-and-run vehicle was last seen traveling north on Northwestern Avenue, FHP officials said.

Anyone with any information can contact FHP at 407-737-2213. The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
