Police: Orlando officer shoots teen trying to flee traffic stop in stolen car

ORLANDO, Fla. — An Orlando police officer shot a teenager early Saturday as he tried to flee a traffic stop while driving a car stolen from Orange County, the Orlando Police Department said.

Officer Jonathan Mills shot 17-year-old Trevon Lamons shortly after midnight, moments after Mills and another officer tried to pull over Lamons along North Lane east North Pine Hills Road, Orlando police Sgt. Wanda Ford said.

Lamons reversed the Dodge Charger he was driving, so the officers exited their police cruiser and approached the stolen vehicle, Ford said.

“The driver continued to advance forward nearly striking one of the officers,” Ford said. “The officer fired his weapon. The driver fled the scene and crashed into an abandoned home.”

Lamons was apprehended and hospitalized in stable condition, but his two passengers remain at large, Ford said.

Lamons was booked into the Juvenile Assessment Center on the following charges: aggravated assault on a law-enforcement officer with a motor vehicle, fleeing and eluding a law-enforcement officer and grand theft of a motor vehicle.

Ford said Lamons has three prior felony arrests, including: vehicle theft and burglary.

Mills, who has been employed with the agency since 2012, wasn’t injured in the shooting, Ford said.

Per standard procedure, Mills is on paid administrative leave as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the shooting.
